The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Anambra State Chapter, has organized a one-day workshop and induction ceremony for its senate members in Awka.

 

The workshop was aimed at enhancing the professional development of members and recognize new members contributions to the field of quantity surveying.

The workshop attracted an array of distinguished guests, including the National President of the Association, Mr. Kene Nzekwe, the Anambra State Commissioner for Works, Engineer Ifeanyi Okoma, Commissioner for Housing, Honourable Pauly Onyeka and the Traditional Ruler of Uke Community, Igwe Charles Agbala.

 

Prominent professionals, captains of industry and budding quantity surveyors also attended.

Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, founded in 1969, is an independent professional body responsible for total cost and procurement management, aiming to achieve clients objectives in capital projects and developments from conception to commissioning and maintenance, across all sectors of the economy for sustainable national development.

 

Addressing the gathering, Mr Nzekwe, emphasized the importance of continuous professional development in maintaining high industry standards, and the roles of quantity surveyors in ensuring cost efficiency, project quality, and sustainability.

He urged members to embrace new technologies and innovative practices to stay relevant in the evolving construction landscape.

 

Delivering a paper on “Financing the Anambra Road Infrastructure: Challenges and Prospects,” Commissioner for Works, Engineer Okoma, stressed the importance of infrastructure finance for economic growth, poverty reduction, and social development in Anambra State and Nigeria, noting that financing infrastructure projects remains a major constraint in delivering efficient and improved infrastructure.

The Commissioner for Housing, Mr Onyeka, discussed the role of quantity surveyors in achieving government housing goals, including accurate cost estimation, efficient project management, adherence to quality standards, and sustainable practices and encouraged surveyors to adopt innovative practices and collaborate closely with other stakeholders.

 

Other paper presentations, including “Roles of Government in Making Public-Private Partnerships” by Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuemerie, “Roles of Quantity Surveyors in the Cost Management of Public-Private Partnerships” by Professor Uche Ajator, and “Private Finance Initiative, Benefits and Drawbacks” by Professor Nath Agu, provided insightful information on the roles of government and the benefits of quantity surveyors.

The Traditional Ruler of Uke community, who is also a quantity surveyor, Igwe Agbala called for greater synergy between professionals and local communities to ensure that development projects meet the people’s needs while the Chairman of Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Anambra State Chapter, Mr. Emma Nwobu, charged the newly inductees to uphold the ethics and standards of the profession while contributing to the industry growth and development.

 

The event, themed “The Use of Private Finance Initiative to Achieve Infrastructural Development in Anambra State,” saw the admission of new senate members and the recognition of members who have distinguished themselves through their contributions and commitment to the field of quantity surveying.
