Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has called on the federal government to take proactive measures to permanently end issue of flood disaster in the state.
The Governor made the call during the flag off of the 2024 flood early warning sensitization in Awka.
The Governor Soludo who spoke through his Deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim described the sensitization as apt as according to him, Anambra has continued to experience flood disaster each year, assuring that the government will collaborate NEMA and State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, to ensure that the people in prone areas in the state are well enlightened to avoid casualty and preventable damages.
The Governor said though the federal government is trying in coming to the aid of the state during flood outbreaks, it should do more in the aspect of bringing permanent solution to the incidents in the state through construction of dam and other necessary interventions.
In an address, the Director General, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar ,Said that NEMA adopted the recent forecasts by Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET, and Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, to design disaster risk communication strategies for downscaling of the early warning messages to communities at risk, hence the sensitization flag off exercise in Anambra.
The NEMA Boss assured that the federal government through her office will continue to do it’s best to ensure prompt interventions in the state during emergencies.
Present at the event were the Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Mr Paul Odenigbo, the state Chief of Staff, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi, Commissioner for Environment, Mr Felix Odimegwu, among others
