Mater Amabilis Secondary School Umuoji in Idemili North Local Government Area, has emerged winner of the tenth edition of the Anambra State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Lady Victoria Chito Onyido annual Quiz competition being sponsored by the Traditional Ruler of Ogidi, Igwe Alexander Onyido.

 

The school won in the quiz competition haven defeated three other secondary schools that made it to the Grand finale during this year’s World Drug Free Day celebration organized at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka by Anambra State NDLEA in collaboration with the University.

The three students that won the competition for Mater Amabilis Secondary School smiled home with one laptop each, cash prizes, offset of their WAEC, NECO and Jamb examination fees, and cheque for one hundred and twenty-two thousand naira for the school.

 

While each of the students of Saint Charles College Onitsha that took second position, went home with Galaxy Tab, cash awards and offset of their WAEC, NECO and Jamb fees, as well as cheque for one hundred and twelve thousand naira for the school, three students that represented Saint Lucy Secondary School Ifite Awka that came third, received plasma television set, cash award, and cheque for ninety-nine thousand naira for the school, Community Secondary School Nanka that took forth position went home with standing fans, and three students that took first second and third positions in the university category smiled home with one hundred thousand naira each.

In a welcome address, the Commander of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Anambra State command, Mr. Daniel Onyishi while restating the commitment of the command towards reducing drug abuse and trafficking in the state, thanked the Traditional Ruler of Ogidi Igwe Alexander Onyido who have been supportive to the command and its course, appealed for more support from the public and government.

 

The Traditional Ruler of Ogidi, Igwe Onyido who is the sponsor of the event, while speaking through his son and Managing Director of Alben Pharmaceutical company limited, Dr Ikenna Onyido said that the competition is part of the company’s social responsibility and a way of remembering their late mother, late Victoria Onyido, as well as contributing in the fight against drug abuse among young people.

In various presentations, the Head of Psychology Department Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Anthony Nedum, Retired Narcotics Commander of the NDLEA, Mr. Inalegwu Ameh called for stiffer measures against drug abuse and trafficking.

 

In their remarks, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu represented by the Dean Faculty of Engineering, Professor Solomon Nwigbo, Chairman on the occasion and Traditional Ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu, represented by Chief Pius Okonkwo, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nnaghe Itam represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fidelis Oga, a business executive, Mr. Arnold Ekweoba, Commended Anambra State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for the various achievements in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking, and promised that they will continue to support them to do better, and called on individuals to invest in prevention of drug abuse and trafficking.
