Officials of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, through its Development Control Unit yesterday removed and dismantled illegal structures and shanties at the Government Residential Area, G.R.A, back of the new Government House and Lodge Awka, Anambra State Capital.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the exercise, the Deputy Commander of the Development Unit, Mr. Nkwachukwu Okonkwo said that what they have done was part of the development control mandate of the agency to ensure that buildings and structures are legally constructed and at the right place.

He explained that the agency had earlier given stop work order to those trying to commercialize the G.R.A but they ignored the order and continued with their work, adding that their officials had been attacked by some people working in one of the buildings they served.

The Deputy Commander pointed out that the agency will continue to discharge its duties effectively and efficiently despite the threats they receive on a daily basis from outlaws in Awka Capital Territory, and made it clear that any structure on top of a water channel or without approval must be removed.

Mr. Okonkwo maintained that ACTDA under the leadership of Mr. Ossy Onuko who is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, will continue to implement Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s policies and programmes in its effort to build a livable, secure and prosperous homeland, as well as to make Awka, a smart mega city.

The agency also removed an illegal structure at Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area.
