The panel of inquiry into the building collapse at Dennis Memorial Grammar School, DMGS and Odu Igbo market, Ochanja, both in Onitsha has extended its inquiry to the recent building collapse at Eke Oyibo Market, Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area.
The collapse at the market on July 4th was reported to have killed two persons and caused injuries to others.
The panel members after a courtesy call on the Awka South Transition Committee Chairman, Prince Chinedu Okafor, intimated him on the mandate of the panel to inquire into the building collapse and to summon all those who were involved in the construction.
Those who were concerned with building, including approving and supervising bodies and agencies have been making appearance before the panel, including the Managing Director of Awka Capital Development Authority, ACTDA, market stakeholders and other relevant persons.
The panel, led by its Chairman, Engineer Victor Meju also undertook the visit, to the site of the building collapse to ascertain the level of damage, as those who appeared before the panel were asked questions regarding the building and its collapse.
Engineer Meju noted that the major problem of building collapse is lack of supervision by concerned persons and agencies in doing the needful at every stage of building a structure, including doing laboratory test for materials and other working implements, saying that if all is done properly, all incident of collapsed building will reduce to a minimal level.
