The Anambra State Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Barrister Ifeatu Obi-Okoye has stated that he received the recent Supreme Court Judgment on the autonomy of the local government areas in Nigeria with mixed feelings.

Speaking to the ABS in Anambra West Local Government Area, Barrister Obi-Okoye said that the judgment raises political excitement about the need for local government autonomy, but noted that the independence and autonomy of a local government do not guarantee the progress and development of such local government.

The APGA Chairman wondered how many local government areas that are viable enough in terms of internal generated revenues to sustain itself, without the support of the state government.

Barrister Obi-Okoye made it clear that the joint account which local governments and the States operate mutually help the local governments to function seamlessly as the state distributes wealth judiciously and equally to all of them as in the case of Anambra State.

According to the Anambra APGA State Chairman, the judicial pronouncement by the Supreme Court which is now a law must be respected but made it clear that it may suffer in terms of administration moving forward.
