The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor has called on President Bola Tinubu to cut down the cost of governance to address the economic hardship in the country.
Most Reverend Ezeokafor made the call while speaking with journalists in Awka.
Most Reverend Ezeokafor who commended the Federal Government for increasing the minimum wage of workers to seventy thousand naira after series of meetings with the Organised Labour urged them to cut down the cost of governance to enable them improve the welfare of the workers more.
The Catholic prelate expressed Joy that the seventy thousand naira minimum wage is to be reviewed every three years unlike what was obtainable in the past, which he said will make a positive impact on the lives of workers.
Bishop Ezeokafor pointed out that seventy thousand naira minimum wage for the nation’s workforce is manageable but cannot sustain a worker for thirty days in view of the economic realities in Nigeria and urged President Tinubu to keep his agreement with the organized labour so that the minimum wage would be reviewed every three years.
The Awka Catholic Bishop praised the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress for being courageous in fighting for the wellbeing of workers and advised them to suggest to the government other ways they can raise funds to meet their demands.
He charged workers to Shun lackadaisical attitude to work and always discharge their duties creditably to justify their pay.
