Anambra State Disability Rights Commission is to set up persons living with disability fund.

 

The Chairman of the Commission, Barrister Chuks Ezewuzie disclosed this during a media briefing on the outcome of the quarterly meeting of the Commission held on Tuesday, twenty-third July, 2024.

The Anambra State Disability Rights Commission was established in accordance with section three of the State Disability Rights law, 2018, as one stop shop for all disability services and related matters in Anambra State.

 

According to Barrister Ezewuzie, the commission deliberated on series of disability issues and adopted two important action plans, which are to set up persons living with disability fund and appointment of the commission’s liaison officers in the twenty one local government areas of the state, one hundred and seventy nine communities and three hundred and twenty six electoral wards in Anambra, to oversee to the welfare of their members in the state.

 

Barrister Ezewuzie explained that in order to pull persons living with disability out of poverty, they are going to establish what he called “Access Market Pavilion establish cooperative society for their members, credit facilities for entrepreneurs with disabilities, trade fair for merchants and skilled persons living with disabilities, among numerous others.

He disclosed that the persons living with disability fund as stipulated by section sixteen of the Anambra State Disability Rights law, 2018 has Bishop Moses Ezedebego, a member of the Commission as Chairman of the fund raising committee to actualize the plan.

 

He appreciated Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the approval to furnish and equip the Commission with state of the art equipment after creating an independent budget line for the Commission, as well as Dr. Pat Okeke, another member of the Commission and wife of Chief Godwin Okeke who built and donated two classroom and hostel blocks to central school which is a special school for the deaf at Odakpu, Onitsha.

 

The Anambra Disability Rights Commission Chairman said that their membership have benefited from Mandela Washington Fellowship for young African leaders as Miss Vivian Ezeonwumelu, the chairman’s social media secretary and Chidimma Anajemba, the commission’s Public Relations Officer have traveled to the United States of America on a six week leadership programme of the fellowship, sponsored by the government of the United States.

Barrister Ezewuzie also appreciate the Rule of Law and Anti Corruption programme, for sponsoring accessibility audit research of Ministries, Departments and Agencies in Anambra, which the result is now yielding positive results and made it clear that all they are doing is to bring to bear, the Soludo’s vision on persons living with disabilities in the state.
