As part of activities lined up to mark the 2024 women’s August meeting, the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF ASSISTED SOMTEC, in partnership with the state Ministry of information has commenced the sensitization of women, starting with planning meeting.

 

In her address during the planning meeting, the UNICEF lead resource person in Anambra state Mrs. Chineze George-Ileka said that this year’s meeting will be different from the previous one because only ten communities will be visited in each of the twenty-one Local Government Areas by the mobilization officers, information officers, health educators and lead facilitators noting that the women will be sensitized on the importance of taking care of the child starting from pregnancy to the first nine months.

She further stated that the birth registration of a child is very vital since one cannot wait for a child to be eighteen before registration.

 

Mrs. George Ileka further stated that during the planning meeting, women will be educated on Human Papilloma virus popularly known as cervical cancer and this illness can be prevented if girls between the ages of nine and fourteen are injected as a way of prevention.

Also speaking, the state health Educator Mrs. Uju Onwuegbuzina said she will ensure that all the community mobilization officers work as a team to get the right result.

 

In her contribution UNICEF Desk officer State ministry of information Mrs. Grace Onwukwe said that during the sensitization they will discuss with women the challenges they are facing with regards to improving the health of their children, adding that parents who have not registered their children should go and register.

Also speaking the Director National Orientation Agency in Anambra State, Mr. Edozie Ajegbu expressed satisfaction with the activities of UNICEF in Anambra State, adding that the State is always at the forefront in the implementation of UNICEF programmes.
