Ahead of the September 28 Local Government election in Anambra State, Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, has met with security chiefs to ensure a free, fair and credible poll.
The meeting, which was held at the conference room of the commission’s headquarters in Awka, had in attendance representatives of the security agencies in the state.
The aim of the meeting was to interact and to come up with strategic security plans to tackle insecurity and ensure the elections are safely conducted in highly sensitive Local Government Areas.
In her remarks, Chairman of the commission, Mrs Genevieve Osakwe, a magistrate, said that the commission is particularly concerned about the safety of staff, adhoc staff and the state citizenry who will help in the conduct or vote in the elections, adding that they need strong assurances of their safety during and after the election.
According to the ANSIEC boss, there is sufficient security to seamlessly conduct the polls but assured that the Commission’s commitment would not be to the detriment of the safety of workers that will be deployed for the election and said that a more robust security architecture will be deployed at major flashpoints for people to be safe and secure before, during and after the election.
On his part, the member of the Commission in-charge of Legal Services and Security, Barrister Osita Igbokwe, said that the meeting is part of activities leading to the conduct of the 2024 local government council elections and pointed out that the commission initiated the steps in collaboration with security agencies in the state to allay the anxiety of people who are afraid of the security situations in their areas.

assured of their full collaboration towards the success of the election and said that their core mandate is to ensure adequate security in all the wards in the state as there will be no room for any sort of security breaches.
