Enugwu village Adazi-Enu Community, in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, was agog with various activities as it celebrated its annual New Yam Festival.

 

The New Yam Festival, known locally as “iwa Ji Ofuu,” is one of the most anticipated events and a longstanding cultural heritage in Enugwu Village, Adazi-Enu.

The celebration, held at Enugwu Hall, attracted notable individuals including members of the igwe’s cabinet, the Otu Nze Na Ozo Group, sons and daughters of Enugwu village, who dressed in beautiful regalia as they offered prayers for a bountiful harvest and blessings for the year ahead.

 

The rhythmic sounds of the Ogene, Ekwe, and Udu drums filled the air, accompanied by traditional songs and dances that reflected the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people.

The festival unfolded with the elders of Enugwu village performing the sacred cutting of the new yam symbolizing that they can now eat the yam.

 

In his address, the Chairman of Enugwu Village, Chief Jideofor Okongwu, offered prayers to the ancestors and the gods of the land, asking for continued protection and prosperity for the community.

Speaking at the event, the President General Adazi-Enu Town Union, Chief Emmanuel Chigozie, expressed his gratitude to the community for their participation and support.

 

In an interview, Prince Dike Okongwu noted that the New Yam Festival is a celebration of who they are as a people, saying that it is their duty to ensure that their children and grandchildren continue to uphold these traditions.

On his part, the Chairman Adazi-Enu Town Union Lagos Branch, Chief Chukwunaekego Felix said the festival not only marks the beginning of the harvest season but also reaffirms the community’s unity, culture, and shared values.

 

Masquerade displays,cultural dance,mbem, empowerment to youths were the high point of the event.
