Culture of a people is said to be their tradition, heritage and way of life which depicts who they are, distinguishing them from other tribes and region.
This was what played out at Ama Okpata, Eziagulu-Otu Aguleri, Anambra East Council Area during the 2024 new yam festival of the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Lawrence Nwofia.
The festival handed over to them by their forefathers as Alo Nmuo, is a unique festival which normally bring the sons and daughters back to their land during the festival to offer thanks to God for a bountiful harvest after farming season.
It started with an interdenominational service where series of prayers were offered and later got to its peak when Igwe Nwofia alongside his cabinets, performed the kolanut ritual in the presence of Ndi Ichie, Ojiani, Ndi Ogo Nwanyi, his age grade and others.
Igwe Nwofia also known as ochiagha Eziagulu otu Aguleri, thanked God for bountiful harvest, saying that alo nmuo is one of the rich cultural heritages of their land where they present and thank God and their fore fathers for what their land yielded and ask for more.
The Eziagulu-Otu Monarch prayed for progress, good health and longevity of people of the community saying that they have continued to have relative peace with their Igala and Anam neighbors and pledged their total support to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration saying that APGA government has done great to them and reminded the governor of their plea about the comletion of Odene Eziagulu-Otu Mkpunando-Otu road.
Felicitating with Igwe Nwofia and Ndi Eziagulu-Otu Aguleri, the Traditional Ruler of Abacha, Igwe Godwin Odiegwu said yam is the richest among all crops as according him, the prestigious celebration means a lot to them and distinguishes Ndi Igbo from other tribes, describing Igwe Nwofia as a revered traditional ruler who always seekt for peace and togetherness.
On his part, the Chairman, Eziagulu-Otu Aguleri Royal Cabinet, Chief Edwin Okechi said that Alo Nmuo is a period they thank and appreciate God who in turn, blesses them abundantly in the next farming season adding that the occasion also brings them together to interact and seek for ways forward in the activities of the community and made a passionate call to Ndi Eziagulu-Otu to support education and give their children the best as it is the bed rock of development and transformation.
In their seperate spechees, some of the chieftains in the community, Chiefs Joseph Makolu and Chukwujekwu Chukwuemeka, maintained that since Igwe Nwofia mounted the throne, their community has been witnessing total development and transformation, brought their youths together, re-ignited the spirit of oneness praying God to bless his reign with longevity and good health.
Lending her voice, the Woman Leader, Eziagulu-Otu Aguleri Development Union, Women’s Wing, Mrs Chinenye Aniekwene, extolled the relative peace existing in their community which she said is the hand work of Igwe Nwofia saying that the women are having it so good as he has used his wealth of knowledge to touched some of their community for better.
Alo nmuo proper, masquerading, presentations and cultural displays climaxed the celebration.
