Members of Onitsha Sports Club in Onitsha North local government area have appealed to the Anambra State Government to stop one Harold Ekwerekwu and his group from vandalizing their property at Onitsha and use dialogue to resolve the matter that exists between them and the group.
The people made the appeal when they staged a peaceful protest about the issue at Government House Awka.
The protesters displayed placards with various inscriptions like “Commissioner of Police enforce court order against land grabbers”, “Governor Soludo save our soul against land grabers”, “Onitsha Sports Club has a Certificate of Occupancy “, among others.
Speaking to journalists after the protest, the Secretary, Onitsha Sports Club Board of Trustees, Right Honourable Emeka Anyaneto explained that they came to the Government House because of vandalization of their property by the group who are laying claim to them.
He said that the group took them to Onitsha Court One two years ago on the grounds that the property belongs to them and when the club served them an injunction from Anambra State High court in Awka, which restrained them from trespassing into the area, they abandoned the matter and ran away.
According to him, on the tenth of this month the same Ekwerekwu came into the club with thugs and started demolishing the structures in the place, even when the property has a Certificate of Occupancy that has been renewed.
Right Honourable Anyaneto further said that they have taken the matter to the law enforcement agencies for redress but nothing has been done about it.
They appealed to Governor Soludo to stop the group from further demolition of their property and broker peace between them and the group to avoid casualty.
Addressing the protesters, the Chief of Staff to Governor Soludo, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi urged them to maintain peace and avoid taking laws into their hands, assuring that he will convey their complaint to the Governor.
Later, the group visited the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nnaghe Obono Itam in his office and reported the matter to him and also visited the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze at the State House of Assembly and urged him to come to their aid.
Responding, Right Honourable Udeze commended them to handling the matter through due process and assured that the House will look into it.
