Isuofia Community in Aguata Local Government Area, recently conferred “Mmili Gulu-egu” chieftaincy title on Anambra governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo. The traditional ruler of Isuofia Community, Igwe Christopher Muoghalu conferred the honour on the Anambra first lady during the 2024 new yam festival of the community. The honour was in recognition and appreciation of the governor’s wife’s love for humanity, humility and selfless services. The title “Mmili Gulu-egu” was a popular alias of Mrs Soludo’s late mother, Mrs Gloria Ezenwanne, a renowned educationist whose stories of discipline, kindness and heroism are still being told today.
In her reaction to the honour, Mrs Soludo explained that the chieftaincy title of “Mmili Gulu-Egu N’Isuofia.” is a rare honour that she holds very close to her heart and recalled that her mother, held the title with a deep sense of responsibility as it resonated with her deep-rooted virtues of selflessness, discipline, and service, assuring that she bears the treasured crown aware of the long expectations and responsibilities. According to the Governor’s wife, “Mmili Gulu-Egu” isn’t just an everyday mark of honour, but a call for a greater responsibility and dedicated the special honour to her mother whose life she said left a great example for what motherhood and service to God and humanity are really all about.
This honour is well deserved and as the saying goes, who the cap fits, should wear it. In life, there are rare individuals whose names resonate in history. These are individuals whose extraordinary life’s stories are told through generations and ages reflecting on how they used their ideas, uniqueness, and nature to make a historical difference. In our world today where compassion, selflessness and humanitarian services have become very scarce, these rare people serve as finest illustrations of hope, perfection, discipline, humanism, brilliance, and role models. The Anambra governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has carved a perfect space in that saintly worldview. In actions, deeds, and words, the Anambra First Lady represents what Mother Teresa of Calcutta described as “doing small things with great love.” She
takes up, with deep emotion, the responsibilities of love, of motherhood and benevolence. But it is not only in showing immense passion for the welfare of others that Mrs Soludo is outstanding. It is rather in her natural approach of touching lives without unnecessary publicity and attracting undue attention to herself. She engages in various charity activities without the usual adulating publicity and simulated behaviours that often trail such interventions in this part of the world.
Most people who have had encounter with the Anambra governor’s wife, have something memorable to take home. Her life reflects the words of Mother Teresa and I quote, “Be kind and merciful. Let no one ever come to you without coming away better and happier.” It didn’t just start with her present position as the state’s first Lady. Mrs Soludo’s humble preference to remain anonymous in her charity activities, often keeps the flashes away but not the lights because of her permeative virtue.
The Anambra Governor’s wife believes that kindness, as a sacred thought of the innermost heart, must operate away from cheers and intentional applauses. She is more about touching lives and motivating people to do the same. Mother Teresa was right when she said and I quote “At the end of life, we are going to be judged on the basis of our love for one another.” Nonye Soludo lives by that amazing norm! She is constantly setting the right example for women and girls. One of such is that a woman can become what she dreams of, by staying committed to hard work, humility and dedication.
What makes the Anambra governor’s wife most unique is the impact she makes on the world around her. Her simplistic standards and overall way of life. Most people have often observed that Mrs Soludo doesn’t exhibit the traditional flamboyance that often spotlights a governor’s wife, especially in Nigeria.
The Anambra First Lady finds peace and satisfaction in the simplest ways of life including compassion, empathy and altruism. The Anambra governor’s wife has often attributed her existence to charity. A very practical Christian, Mrs Soludo always demonstrates in her daily life the lessons from the Beatitudes of Matthew five, from verse three to twelve: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.”
There is no doubt that the chieftaincy title of Mmili Gulu-egu” from her community will further encourage her to do more for the society.
