Inmates in correctional facilities after serving their prison terms, sometimes turn out worse than they were after leaving the prison due to lack of character reformation, occasioned by challenges in the Custodial centers.

In an effort to help in the reformation of inmate’s character, the Anambra State Chapter of the Prison Fellowship Nigeria has been inaugurated and members underwent two days training to equip them in discharging their responsibilities.

The Executive Director of Prison Fellowship Nigeria, Mr. Benson Iwuagu, a lawyer, explained that PFN is a faith-based organization, made up of different Christian denominations aimed at reforming criminals in correctional facilities through the teaching of God’s word to bring about behavioral change.

The Controller of the Anambra Sate Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Mr. Joseph Usifo, who attended the event held in Awka, emphasized that reforming inmates is both physical and spiritual and thanked the PFN for partnering with the correctional service on the spiritual needs of inmates to engineer change.

The State Chairman of Prison Fellowship Nigeria, Apostle Peter Okoye pointed out that the state Chapter executive was elected last year and are being formally inaugurated, adding that the training acquired will help them to impact on the inmates through God’s love to become better citizens, including the skills and family empowerment they get.

The Head of Training for PFN, Mr. Michael Ade, said that rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates in partnership with the Nigeria Correctional Service through Behavioral Modification Training for PFN Volunteers is the core aim of the organization, noting that funding for effective service delivery is one of the organization’s challenges.

Some participants, an NCS officer, Mr. Justin Nwachukwu and Evangelist Ada Emecheta agreed that the training is impactful and that they are ready to make a difference in the lives of the inmates through God’s teaching and empowerment.

Formal inauguration of the executive members, amongst others formed the high points of the event.
