As teachers in Anambra State join their counterparts across the globe to celebrate World Teachers Day, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has been commended for making the teaching profession in the state more attractive to the younger generation through his investment in the education sector.
Some stakeholders in the sector bared their minds on the sidelines of the celebration.
In his remarks, the Chairman Education Committee, Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Anayo Okpalaeke said the constant motivations from Governor Soludo to teachers in the state have contributed in stirring up the desire in the younger generation to take up teaching as a profession when they grow up.
He mentioned the motivations to include better salary package than what was obtainable years back, saying that motivations increases workers’ performance and urged teachers not to relent in giving their best to younger ones.
The Board Member One , Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, Ify Anatune pointed out that Governor Soludo as a teacher-turned -Governor has changed the image of teaching in Anambra State and the younger ones are looking up to him as a role model.
She disclosed how she spoke to some young children on the issue recently and was surprised that four out of seven of them, said they would take up teaching as a profession because they want the title Professor, to be attached to their names.
In his remarks, the Secretary Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Anambra State Council, Comrade Nathaniel Metu said before now, young people see teaching as a job they can hold onto before they could get a better one but now the mindset has been changed and people are now aspiring to come into the profession as the standard for recruitment has been raised high giving opportunities for only the best to be recruited.
However, the Principal, Community Secondary School, Oko, Mrs Ifeoma Enekwechi maintained that some young people see the profession as one of the poorest because of the pay package, saying that increasing the pay package of teachers will help to make it more attractive to the younger ones as well as increase the number of males taking up teaching as a profession.
The theme for 2024 celebration is ,”Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a new Social Contract for Education,” aimed to highlight the need for systemic change and global support for teachers.
