Stakeholders from the South East geopolitical zone have agreed to make concerted efforts to eradicate diseases associated with hand washing.

This agreement was revealed in a press briefing at the end of a one day stakeholder engagement held Enugu organized by UNICEF and Broadcasting Corporation of Abia, BCA to mark the 2024 Global Hand Washing Day.

The engagement attracted journalists and representatives of civil society groups drawn from Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi states.

The theme for this year’s event is “Why is hand washing still important?”

Speaking at the briefing, n her message the Chief Field Officer and Officer in-charge, UNICEF Field Office, Enugu, Mrs Juliet Chiluwe represented by Monitoring For Result Officer, Mrs Maureen Zubie-Okolo noted that UNICEF supported hand hygiene initiative to combat some deadly diseases like Ebola and Cholera and that since the global Covid-19 pandemic, UNICEF has scaled up hand hygiene efforts in various countries and regions.

According to her, everyone must work together to achieve universal hand hygiene.

In her contribution, the WASH Specialist, Mrs Rebecca Gabriel who spoke on the topic “why are clean hands still important?” observed that clean hands remain a fundamental defense against the the spread of infections, illnesses and germs.

For the Communications Officer, UNICEF Field Office, Dr Mrs Ijeoma Onuora-Ogwe, hand washing with soap and clean water plays an important role in reducing the transmission of outbreak related disease as she charged the media to use their different platforms to inform the people on the importance of regular hand washing with water soap or ash.
