Mmaigbo Empowerment Foundation, MIEF, Worldwide has held its third Skill Exhibition and Empowerment Grand Finale with the theme,”Promoting Igbo Cultural Heritage and Identity Through Apprenticeship System and Empowerment.”
The programme was organized by MIEF in collaboration with Centre For Arts, Culture and Humanities, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
Items given out to the apprentices were brand new sewing machines, laptops, hair dryers, ovens, make-up packs, bench grinders, among others.
The Convener, Comrade Uzo Ekemezie in his speech explained that the objective of the foundation is to eradicate all forms of social vices among young people and ensure a crime-free society, through sustained attitudinal change programme and full-time engagement of youth in skill acquisition trainings, bearing in mind that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Caro Arinze-Umeoji represented by Reverend Father Bonachristus Umeogu noted that as a promoter of Igbo culture and traditions, she is in support of Mmaigbo Empowerment Foundation saying that Unizik will soon commence the presentation of certificates to the Mmaigbo apprentices and urged them to ensure that they are good ambassadors of the foundation.
For the Anambra State Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji, Mmaigbo Empowerment Foundation is a consistent non-governmental organization that has the ability to adapt to programmes and situations and to pull through empowerment equipment, worth millions of naira, saying it is in line with the one youth two skills of the state government.
In their presentations, some of the discussants, Professor Nkechi Nwokoye of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and Reverend Geofrey Nganwuchu of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, said apprenticeship system is what the Igbo are known for which has helped to bring up Igbo youths in various skills making them self reliant, useful to their families and the society.
They noted that apprenticeship system should be encouraged and supported hence the reason Mmaigbo came into existence to encourage youths learn skills that will make them self-reliant.
Some of the beneficiaries drawn from across Nigeria, Miss Francisca Nneke, Miss Titi Oyeleke, Miss Chinwendu Okoroafor among others, recalled their experiences with Mmaigbo Foundation and appreciated them for equipping them with the various skills and prayed God to replenish them.
Dignitaries that graced the occasion were the Acting National President,Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, former Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi represented by Mr Valentine Obienyem, former Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service, Sir Chido Obidiegwu, among others.
