The Federal Government has announced the dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, following grave breaches of the laws governing the university, and disregard for lawful directives from the Federal Ministry of Education.

In a release signed on behalf of the ministry by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Boroiwo Folasade, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, emphasized that urgent measures were needed to prevent further deterioration of the situation at the university; as illegal decisions taken by the Governing Council of the institution posed a significant risk of further destabilization.

Dr Alausa also announced the removal of the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Benard Odo, for being appointed illegally by the dissolved Governing Council, adding that in accordance with the university’s founding Act, a new Acting Vice Chancellor will be appointed and a new Governing Council constituted as soon as possible.
