The Executive Director, Social and Integral Development Centre,and Host Tax Justice and Governance Platform,Ugochi Ehiahuruike has called on traders to pay their tax as at when due to enable Anambra State Government provide more social amenities in the state.
She made the call during an onboarding meeting with relevant stakeholders on tax for service project organised by SIDEC in collaboration with Civil Society Legislative And Advocacy Centre and supported by Oxfam Nigeria.
Lady Ugochi who noted that tax payment is for public good and services explained that the essence of the meeting was to improve the understanding of people with respect to payment of tax, levies and rate, tax policies and programmes of the state government and to achieve participatory governance in terms of decision making at the major markets in the state .
In his remarks, the Chairman of Anambra Internal Revenue Service, AiRS, Dr Greg Ezeilo represented by Mr Chika Ofomata lauded market leaders across the state for partnering the state government to achieve its internally generated revenue target, saying that the agency is committed to getting tax payment right at the 150 well structured markets in Anambra which will enable government to meet development needs of the state.
On his part, the Chairman, Anambra State Market Amalgamated Traders Association, Aguata Zone, Comrade Christopher Ezeigwe commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for using the tax payer’s money to develop the state, assuring that the association will always help the Soludo administration to deliver dividends of democracy to Ndi Anambra by ensuring that traders in the local government pay their taxes and levies promptly.
The Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service, Mr Christopher Molokwu assured that the establishment is always open and accessible for the state government to sell their tax programme project to Ndi Anambra.
A key note speaker at the meeting, Professor Uche Nwaogwugwu attributed low rate of tax collection in the state to multiple taxation and insecurity, and called on the state government to employ technology in tax collection and address insecurity in the state in order to meet its target in revenue generation and grow the state’s Gross Domestic Product.
