Former President Goodluck Jonathan has encouraged Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to remain undeterred by the ongoing political turmoil in the state.
Speaking at an event in Nihi Community, Etche Local Government Area, on Sunday, Jonathan expressed confidence that Fubara would overcome the challenges and emerge as a “political general.”
“I understand the difficulties you are facing,” Jonathan said. “This is your first time in a top political office, and such challenges are part of the process. Remember, no one becomes a general without fighting battles. These trials will prepare you for greater leadership roles. With your dedication and the strong support of the Rivers people, I believe God will guide you through.”
He emphasized the importance of peace in Rivers State, describing it as central to the Niger Delta region. Jonathan warned that instability in the state could have a ripple effect on the nation’s economy.
“We need a stable Rivers State because it is the heart of the Niger Delta. Any disruption here could escalate into a broader crisis in the region, which would harm the country’s economy,” he noted.
Jonathan urged political actors to prioritize governance over rivalry, saying, “Political offices have tenures. Let those in office focus on their work. After their term, others will have their chance. There’s no need for destructive competition.”
During the event, the former president was honored with the traditional title of Eze Udo 1 of Etche by the Supreme Council of Etche Traditional Rulers.
Both Jonathan and Fubara were present to mark the 10th anniversary of the coronation of Eze Nwala, the Onye Ishi Agwuru III of Ulakwo-Umuselem in Etche.
