Members of Ide village, Ifite quarters, Alor in Idemili South Council Area have sent a save-our-soul message to the Anambra State Government over the expanding gully erosion in the village, and illegal felling of trees by hoodlums along the erosion site, which they said is posing danger to residents.
When ABS news crew visited the area, it was observed that the flood-control channel built in 1983 had collapsed, while a large percentage of the economic trees planted by the villagers to control the erosion from expansion have been felled by hoodlums.
Speaking to the ABS, the Chairman, Ide Aka village, Alor, Mr. Chukwudi Johnson, named one Ifenna Okafor as the leader of the hoodlums felling the economic trees, and called on the Anambra State Ministry of Environment to intervene and prosecute those engaging in what he described as an “ecological crime”, while coming to their aid to save them from the erosion.
Contributing, the Legal Counsel for the village Assembly, Barrister Kennedy Uche, explained that felling of trees in the erosion-prone area amounts to an ecological crime, and expressed hope that the law will take its course on the suspects.
Denying the accusation, Mr. Okafor, who said he is the Chairman of Umuoburu kindred, Alor, described it as cheap blackmail and conspiracy, and explained that the village Vice Chairman contracted him to clear all fallen trees blocking free flow of flood, leading to the destruction of farm lands.
