Governor Chukwuma Soludo has restated that the Onitsha River Port is critical to the economy of Anambra State and Nigeria at large, reason his administration is committed to making it operational.
Correspondent, Joseph Egbeocha reports that the Governor spoke when the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Pieter Leenknegt, visited the Onitsha Port.
Governor Soludo, represented by the Commissioner for Transport, Mrs Patricia Igwebuike, noted that about sixty to seventy percent of containers with goods enter the South East by road through Onitsha, saying that dredging the River Niger, which requires about twenty billion naira, will enable more businesses to thrive in the area.
An official of the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Mr Chris Mbonu, explained that the Onitsha River Port still has challenges of dredging and regulatory bottlenecks.
In his remark, the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Leenknegt, explained that the visit was to familiarize and know areas of collaboration in inland waterway management.
