Lebanese army Chief Joseph Aoun has been elected as the country’s president, ending a power vacuum that lasted for more than two years.

Aoun aged sixty secured ninety-nine votes from the one hundred and twenty-six-seat parliament to win the presidency in a second round of voting a move that came weeks after a tenuous ceasefire agreement halted fourteen months of fighting between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, as the country seeks aid for reconstruction.
