Grief and sorrow filled the air in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State as the community came together to bid farewell to victims of the stampede that occurred on Saturday, twenty-first December, 2024.
At an inter-denominational funeral service held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church School field Ihiala, the pioneer Anglican Bishop of Ihiala Diocese, Right Reverend Ralph Okafor, who drew his preaching from Psalm twenty-three, urged the affected families to hold on to faith and find solace in God.
Addressing the crowd, the Founder Obijackson Foundation, Chief Ernest Obiejesi, who expressed deep concern over the incident, assured that adequate steps will be taken to prevent future occurrence, and promised the foundation’s continued support to the affected families and Okija community at large.
Some of the affected family members who spoke to the ABS, including Chief Sunday Udezigwe and Mrs. Olivia Ibeneme, described the incident as devastating, but appreciated the Obijackson Foundation for their supports so far.
After the funeral service, families who were yet to bury their loved ones proceeded to lay their bodies to rest.
