Forty-eight thousand nine hundred and thirty-two inmates are currently held in the country’s correctional facilities as Awaiting Trial Persons.

The Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, who made this known at an interactive session with field officers, noted overcrowding as the most pressing issue facing the Nigerian Correctional Service, but announced that the service would collaborate with the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police and other prosecuting agencies to expedite trials for inmates awaiting court proceedings.
