A motor park  in this part of the world refers  to  a terminal  where vehicles, passengers, or goods begin or end a journey. It is  where passengers get on or off a   bus,  taxi or other commercial vehicles.

Motor parks serve very important purposes in designated areas they  are established including decongesting traffic, generating revenue, improving aesthetic value of the environment and most importantly enhancing  safety of lives .

A careful look across Anambra State over the past two years, will reveal that more motor parks and bus stops are springing up at strategic locations  especially in Awka capital territory.  This is a welcome development and worthy to be given the needed support by well meaning residents of the state.

Unfortunately, some commercial bus drivers and tricycle operators, instead of using the motor parks for loading and disembarking their passengers, often do that at the centre of the road, thereby endangering not only their lives but also that of their passengers and other passersby. This reckless attitude of drivers is one of  the major causes of traffic  gridlock on  roads.

Many commercial drivers   avoid using  motor parks, perhaps  to slip pass revenue collectors or  in a rush to meet up with their financial targets  for the day. However, no reason is cogent enough to avoid  use of motor parks because of inherent  dangers associated  with such negligence and recklessness because of  lost of lives  and injures.

Bus and keke drivers should be reminded that to continually refuse to use motor parks while picking up or discharging passengers while on transit is a serious violation of traffic rules that attracts sanctions.

It is important for passengers to speak out against this negative attitude to protect their lives because road safety is everyone’s business and an issue of public health importance.

Stakeholders and relevant government agencies, including traffic control officials and motor parks managers should be extra vigilant and uphold utmost professionalism ensuring drivers and passengers’ safety.

They must insist that drivers make proper use of the parks as well as bus stops. No tricycle operator, shuttle or bus driver should be allowed to pick or drop passengers along the road no matter the circumstances.

In addition, there is need for creation of more parking spaces, especially in market areas to ensure conducive environment for traders, buyers and motorists. Traders selling on the roads and pedestrian walkways close to markets should be relocated to help decongest traffic.

The free  flow of  traffic  at  Eke Awka market  these days should be maintained and  improved on and  those  who still  display  their wares on the roads with reckless abandon should be discouraged to reduce risk of accidents and possible loss of lives and injures.

Government agencies and officials involved in traffic management and orderliness in these areas should take up the gauntlet and restore decency on roads.
