Residents of Onitsha have commended the Anambra State Fire Service for its prompt response to a tanker accident that occurred this morning at Army Gate, along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

When ABS arrived the scene, they observed that firefighters from Ochanja, Main Market, Building Materials, Ogidi, and Okpoko units, alongside the Nigerian Police and the Red Cross, were working tirelessly to contain the situation.

Their efforts continued until 4 p.m., when normalcy was restored.

An eyewitness who spoke to ABS Mrs. Chinyere Onyechi said that the tanker had been parked, and the driver stepped out when it suddenly began to roll.

On seeing the vehicle rolling the driver rushed in an attempt to stop it but the vehicle picked up speed, crashed into a pole, and somersaulted, spilling its contents and raising fears of a possible fire outbreak among residents and passersby.

She said within minutes, personnel of the Anambra State Fire Service arrived the scene, swiftly containing the situation and preventing a potential disaster.

A Local trader at the scene expressed relief over the timely intervention of the firefighters and others who assisted in controlling traffic.

Fire service officials who spoke to ABS, Mr. Onyechi Anyaegbuna and Engr. Oby Ogbuli frowned that upon arrival, they met individuals scooping the content of the tanker—an act they described as a life-threatening risk.

They cautioned citizens to desist from such act and thanked individuals who helped drain the gutters after the situation was neutralized.
