Today is International Mother Language Day.
United Nations set aside twenty-first February annually to re-awaken people’s consciousness, especially the African continent, to its multi-language diversity.
Commenting on the day, residents of Awka urged government in the South East zone institute educational policies to protect the Igbo language and save it from extinction.
Speaking on the celebration in Awka, Mr. Chinemelu Ogbuefi and Mr. Patrick Otokolo, called on governments in the South East region to institute educational policies to protect Igbo language for extinction.
In their contributions, Chukwuemeka Onwukaezema and Juliet Oluchi blamed the drop in the use of Igbo as a mother language on the effect of globalization and stressed the need for multilingual education to be adopted in school curriculum to salvage the situation.
