On the evening of October twentieth, 2024, the Orumba North community was thrown into mourning by the passing of Professor Humphrey Nwosu, a beloved father, brother, hero, patriot, and renowned scholar.

Professor Nwosu, born on October second, 1941, in Ajalli, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria, was a distinguished figure in academia, public administration and political science. He earned his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Political Science  from the University of California at Berkeley in 1973 and 1976, respectively. Upon returning to Nigeria, he joined the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he rose to the rank of full professor.

Professor Nwosu’s dedication to public service was evident in his various roles at state and national levels.

He served in the cabinet of Governor Samson Omeruah of the old Anambra State, where he played a pivotal role in empowering traditional rulers and resolving land disputes.

Professor Nwosu chaired the Federal Technical Committee on the application of Civil Service Reforms in the local government service and in 1989, he was appointed the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (FEDECO), succeeding his mentor, Eme Awa.

He spearheaded the introduction of the groundbreaking “Option A4” and open ballot voting system for the 1993 Presidential election, significantly enhancing transparency and credibility. This election, widely considered the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, saw Chief Moshood Abiola emerge as the presumed winner. Despite facing immense pressure from the military regime, Professor Nwosu bravely released the election results, showcasing his unwavering commitment to democratic principles.

Professor Nwosu’s legacy as a champion of democracy is indelibly etched in the annals of Nigerian history.

He founded Orumba North Local Government secretariat where he will be  mourned today by people of the   Local Government Council.

Tomorrow, Nigerians will gather to celebrate a man who embodied integrity and courage in an era of political turmoil.

Professor Nwosu’s unwavering commitment to democracy and his tireless efforts to build a better Nigeria will forever inspire Nigerians, Africa and indeed  the entire black race.

His memory will continue to be honoured as an erudite scholar, a seasoned administrator, and a mentor who shaped countless minds through his lectures, publications, and actions. His absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

In recognition of his immense contributions to his  community, state, and nation, the Orumba North Local Government Council decided to immortalize Professor Humphrey Nwosu by naming the Orumba North Local Government Secretariat after him and erecting a sculptural portrait in his honor.

The Council also  extends condolences to his family, the Ajalli community and all those who mourn his passing.

Professor Humphrey Nwosu, your legacy will live on in the hearts of all who believe in democracy and good governance. May your soul find eternal peace.
