The general public has been warned against the illegal possession of firearms, as anyone caught in possession of an unlicensed weapon will face a ten-year prison sentence.
Correspondent Emmanuel Okonkwo reports that the South-East Director of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, Mr. Okechukwu Ugo, issued the warning during an interactive session with the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, at Mr. Godwin Ezemo Press Centre, Awka, while emphasizing that any Nigerian who wishes to own a firearm must obtain a license from the Inspector General of Police.
The NCCSALW South-East Director stated that the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Act 2024 signed into law by President Bola Tinubu last year, empowers the centre to combat the proliferation of illicit arms, and appealed for the collaboration between the centre and NUJ in the sensitization of the public on the dangers of illegal possession of arms.
Responding, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists Anambra State Council, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu assured the team that the union will partner the centre as the course it is championing is an ideal one which will go a long way in minimizing crime and criminality in the zone.
