The funeral service for Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, drew dignitaries and well-wishers to his hometown of Ajalli in Anambra State, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid tribute to a man whose death he called a great loss to Nigeria.
In a heartfelt message delivered by the Minister for Works, Senator Dave Umahi, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to reflect on Professor Nwosu’s invaluable contributions to the nation’s democratic processes.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration among citizens to unlock further dividends of democracy, a legacy that Nwosu had fiercely championed.
Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo also honored the deceased, labeling him a harbinger of peace and urged residents to prioritize efforts in fostering lasting peace within their communities, further recognizing Nwosu’s role in conducting Nigeria’s freest and most transparent elections in 1993.
Mr. Nnaemeka Nwosu, the late professor’s son, expressed pride in his father’s legacy and gratitude to the federal government for enabling Nwosu to serve his nation in such a pivotal role.
According to him, his father was a peaceful man, highlighting the core values his family cherished.
Earlier, the Anglican Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Right Reverend Samuel Ezeofor, delivered a sermon during the service, encouraging the congregation to live a life of service to God, mindful of life’s transience.
He remarked on Professor Nwosu’s distinguished status as a Knight committed to humanitarian endeavors, encapsulating the essence of a life dedicated to service.
The event was graced by a host of prominent figures, including former Governor Peter Obi and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, reflecting the significant impact of Professor Nwosu’s life and work on Nigerian society.
