The Anambra State Government with the support from the Carter Centre have successfully performed over eighty free hydrocelectomy surgeries across the three major general hospitals in the State, namely Enugwu-Ukwu, Umueri and Ekwulobia hospitals.
Speaking to newsmen after visiting Umueri General Hospital to see things for himself, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike who appreciated the Carter Centre for their support disclosed that hydrocele affects people’s lifestyles negatively and reduce the confidence they have in themselves, and extolled Governor Chukwuma Soludo for providing the enabling environment and logistics support that made the surgeries possible.
The Chief Medical Officer in charge of Umueri General Hospital, Dr. Chinenye Obi said that the hospital has all the facilities needed to do the surgery and expressed reservation at the number of people that are still living with the disease.
One of the beneficiaries of the free surgery, Mr. Somadina Nzegwu from Umuoba Anam, Anambra East Local Government Area revealed that he had done the hydrocelectomy surgery before three years ago at the cost of three hundred and eighty thousand naira and extolled Governor Soludo and Carter Centre for the free surgery exercise.
