Anambra State was created in 1991 by the then Military administration of Retired General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida with Awka, a blacksmithing Community, as its capital.

As the euphoria of the creation of the state died down, it dawned on the Anambra

people that the new state was bereft of infrastructural development. Hence, the launching of Anambra State development fund but the proceeds did not see the light of the day.

The first Military Administrator, Navy Captain Joseph Abulu, left Awka, the State Capital, as a glorified State Capital.

Apart from the infrastructure which Navy Captain Abulu met at the State College of Education, in today’s Government House, Awka, no other structures were seen on the ground even beyond his administration. This lack of infrastructure and stunted growth did not receive appreciable attention from successive administrations in the state.

Such was the situation when Governor  Chukwuma Soludo mounted the saddle of Leadership at Agu Awka.

From inception, Governor Soludo had a master plan aimed at restoring dignity and confidence in governance and Anambra political landscape. Today, the game changer has changed the narrative in the history of Anambra State. Okpoko, which had remained a ghetto  has been transformed to raise standard of living of its residents and visitors in the area. This is an area completely neglected and abandoned by previous administrations. In three years, Governor Soludo has  constructed hundreds of Kilometers  of new roads, flyovers, bridges and erosion control projects in various parts of the State, including the Ekwulobia flyover.

In addition to this unprecedented pace of infrastructural development, the Governor has also set a pace in tacking security challenges through effective security architecture anchored on Anambra State Homeland Security Law and driven by Udo Ga Achi security network and Agunechemba  security outfit .

Governor Soludo  embarked on massive urban regeneration to upgrade towns and semi urban areas to meet the demands of the Twenty First Century.

With the design for the Anambra intercity railway network,  the remodeling of major cities of Awka, Onitsha and other cities, the Anambra mixed industrial city, the proposed four – Star Hotel in Awka and   the Awka Fun city, the journey to making Awka a befitting State Capital  has  been accelerated.

Again, the on going  new Government House and Lodge projects  in Awka will further upgrade quality of infrastructure and give Awka a befitting capital city status.  All these are geared towards making Anambra State a preferred business and investment destination as well as attract foreign capital investment that will enhance the actualization of the Anambra vision 2070 development plan.

Governor Soludo has laid a solid foundation for sustainable development of Awka and the state capital will never be the same again.  Governor  Soludo is not only working for the present  Ndi Anambra but also for generations yet unborn. Such a visionary Leader deserves  massive support of the people.
