The high cost of living in Nigeria no doubt cuts across every spares of life including accommodation which is one of the basic necessities of life.
Presently in the commercial city of Onitsha, a three bedroom apartment in an old building goes for six hundred thousand naira and above per annum, while new apartment ranges from one million naira and above.
Correspondent Blessing Ijedibia observed that in Onitsha metropolis most residents could no longer afford decent accommodation for their family due to the continuous increase in House rents.
Commenting on the ugly trend, a builder, Architect Daniel Ezeh lamented that the attitude of those acting as house agents is one of the major causes of increase in house rents as they normally increase house rents above the stipulated amount placed by the landlord, while Mrs Mary Orji a resident of Onitsha, lamented that most families can no longer provide other needs of the family as house rent increases, calling on government at all levels to intervene.
