The Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Anambra State, Dr. Ben Eze Agbogu, says it is a great honour to serve the country, engaging in different military operations both in Nigeria and abroad.

 

Speaking during the 2024-Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, Dr. Eze Agbogu, who retired from the Army in 1999 called on members of the public to always honour the veterans for their selfless service and thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for being friendly with members of the state legion.

The National President, Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, Barrister Titus Akpudo who was also at the solemn ceremony noted that the Yuletide showcased the efforts the security agencies made in ensuring a hitch free celebration.

 

The traditional ruler of Umueri, Igwe Ben Emeka explained that Anambra State was peaceful during the Yuletide, with improved infrastructure noticeable, urging the government not to neglect the widows and families of departed members of the armed forces.

The Transition Committee Chairman for Anambra East Local Government Area, Dr Anselem Onuorah said the day is important to remember the sacrifices of armed forces both for the dead and living, and thanked the State government for its efforts in improving security and assisting serving armed personnel.

 

Other retired veterans who spoke during the event, including Warrant Officer Dominic Okafor of the Nigerian Army who retired in 2017, Captain Tony Egbu, who retired after the Nigerian Civil War and a member of the Nigerian Legion, Dr. Edwin Uba emphasized that it is an honour to serve the nation and harped on the need for their welfare to be improved.

Meanwhile, a Lagos based business Executive, Chief Jonathan Nzekwe has described law and order as a foundation for a decent society.

 

Speaking to Newsmen in Awka, on the significance of this year’s Armed forces Remembrance Day celebration, Chief Nzekwe who commended the Nigerian Armed forces for all their efforts in enforcing law and order in the society, called for improved remuneration for them to ensure more effective and efficient service delivery.

 

He commended members of the Nigerian Legion both living and Dead for their sacrifices in promoting the unity, peace and corporate existence of the Nigerian Nation, and called on the federal government to always remember the families of the fallen heroes especially their widows and widowers in the nation’s affairs to give them a sense of belonging.

Chief Nzekwe called for the proper engagement of children of the fallen heroes as a way of rewarding the selfless services rendered by their parents to the country.

 

The Business executive who hails from Awka, used the opportunity to call on the federal government to create more business-friendly policies that will ensure speedy Industrialization of the country.

 

Describing the private sector as the major employer of labour, Chief Nzekwe maintained that multiple taxation, poor road network, inconsistency in electricity supply and adulteration of products are major problems facing Manufacturers in Nigeria and called on the government to seek ways of addressing the ugly trend.

He commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for providing the enabling environment for the peaceful celebration of the last Christmas and New year festivities in addition to series of road projects across Anambra State especially in Awka metropolis that led to high reduction of gridlocks usually experienced during festivities.

 

Chief Nzekwe who is a prominent Member of Awka Development Union in Lagos State, charged Ndi Anambra living in other parts of the country to make their impact felt in their home state by bringing part of their investments home to help the government of Professor Chukwuma Soludo in making Anambra a livable and prosperous Homeland.

 

He called on the Youths especially those of Awka extraction to key into the one youth two skills initiative of the Soludo administration in Anambra State to become self-reliant and employers of labour.

 

Chief Nzekwe commended the people of Awka Community living in the United States and Canada for empowering over two hundred Awka Youths with skills and scholarships, saying that the gesture will take many Youths out of the street thereby creating a bright future for them calling on others to emulate the group.
