A onetime Inspector General of Police in Nigeria, Mr. Solomon Arase, says it is time for Nigeria to introduce technology in dealing with crimes and criminality.
Mr. Arase stated this while answering questions from newsmen at the Anambra State Police headquarters; after inspecting the ongoing police recruitment exercise in the state.
Speaking to the media, the former Inspector General of Police, who is also the Chairman, Police Service Commission, commended the collaboration between the Commissioners of Police and staff of the Police Service Commission, in the states he has visited, and noted that the two bodies have forged a formidable collaboration that makes the exercise seamless.
Mr. Arase explained that Nigerians can now see that the police is doing something credible, and expressed satisfaction with what he has seen so far.
He commended the President Bola Tinubu led administration for approving the recruitment of thirty thousand personnel to augment what is on ground, but regretted that the number of police officers in the country is still grossly inadequate.
According to the former Police IG, prioritizing the welfare of the officers of the Nigerian Police Force is another way of motivating them and boosting their morales to do more, even as he maintained that community policing, where every stakeholder is brought onboard, will help in intelligence gathering, thereby reducing crimes and criminality.
Mr. Arase described technology as crucial in modern day policing; as there is no amount of police officers that will be enough without complementing it with technology, calling for a legislation that will compel people who build housing estates, shopping malls, among others, to install close circuit television cameras CCTV, to aid security architecture.
