Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh has officially inaugurated skill acquisition programme in Ado Girls Secondary School, Onitsha, in Onitsha North Local Government Area.
Professor Chuma-Udeh represented by the Onitsha Zonal Director of Education of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Lady Josephine Igboanugo said the introduction of the skill acquisition programme by the school principal, Mrs Chinelo Okeocha which is in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s agenda of One Youth, Two Skills initiative will bring about job creation in addition to their various vocation, will equip the students to be self-reliant in future.
On his part, the State Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Patrick Aghamba represented by Mr Patrick Egwuatu said skill acquisition programme will curb all forms of criminalities and applauded Mrs Okeocha, for reviving skill acquisition in the school.
Speaking during the event, the principal of the school, Mrs Okeocha said the aim of introduction of the skill acquisition programme was to equip the girls with necessary skills for the future listed their challenges to include unavailability of necessary equipment such as machine for sewing clothes and wig and solicited support of all parents of the school in area of providing their children with the needful materials.
The President-General of Onitsha, Sir Chike Egweeogu described the programme as a welcome development having seen various skills developed saying that a revival of the vocational studies will bridge the gap of unemployment as they will be an employer of labor, and urged other schools to emulate them.
The Chairman of Parents Teachers Association of Ado Girls Secondary School, Pastor Israel Ugwu, A member Ado Old Girls Association Mrs Gloria Iweneafumba among others extolled the efforts of the management and called for the sustainability of the programme.
One of the students who showcased her dancing skills, Miss Uchechukwu Edo expressed satisfaction for partaking in the event, disclosed that her ambition is to be a dancer and a Banker in future.
