Anambra State government is leaving no stone unturned in the search and rescue operation at the site of the tragic Ochanja market building collapse incident, where a three two-storey building collapsed.
Officials of the Physical Planning Board, Ministry of Works, among others also visited the scene to conduct assessment of the situation and intensify rescue efforts.
As at the time of visit, seven casualties have been confirmed, with thirteen individuals injured.
According to Barrister Chike Maduekwe who is the Chairman of Anambra State Physical Planning Board, such incidents could be avoided if developers follow proper procedures and comply with the state building laws.
Barrister Maduekwe emphasized that Governor Soludo has consistently stressed the necessity of planning permits for every structure in the state, with violators subject to punishment.
He reiterated the commitment of the board in ensuring the safety of structures in Anambra, pointing out that the Governor has ordered the demolition of any building without a planning permit and the prosecution of those involved.
The Commissioner for Works, Engineer Ifeanyi Okoma, expressed the state government’s sadness over the incident and announced that
a committee of inquiry has be set up to investigate the collapse and address other potentially hazardous buildings nearby.
In their reactions two of the survivors, Henry Opara and Akachukwu Onuora recounted the harrowing experience of being inside the building when it collapsed, noting that luck was on their side as they managed to escape, unlike some of th
eir colleagues.
