Umudioka village Awka, displayed its rich ancestral heritage during the Founder’s Day celebration held at Ngene Agu Deity Shrine, Awka.

 

As the custodian of the Deity, Chief Tochukwu Nwosu performed the spiritual rites during the event, where adherents from far and near came to pay homage.

 

the atmosphere at the Ngene Agu shrine was that of celebration, with cooking, provision of drinks and dancing by individuals and groups who gathered for the celebration.

 

After performing the spiritual rites of the event and receiving those who came with their gifts to pay homage and offer prayers, the custodian of the Deity, Chief Nwosu explained that the deity came through ‘Nwa Dioka’ from Akpom who came to heal Awka people, who had infection after the ‘Igbu Ichi’ facial markings and believed to have been healed through the Deity.

Chief Nwosu further noted that the ceremony, known as ‘Ogbugba Uta’ Ngene Agu, means celebrating the Founder and New Yam, which he said is not celebrated when others were celebrating because they have to wait for the deity’s blessings before coming to thank the deity, as he prayed for life and prosperity of adherents.

 

Also speaking, Mr. Peter Anaekwesi, an Auguleri traditionalist, in his remark, opined that tradition and culture are important in the life of every community and emphasized that people should make efforts to connect to their roots while Mr. Onyedika Kalu a herbalist from Ohafia, harped that culture is unique even with the existential challenge it faces and called for deep understanding of tradition and culture.

Mrs. Onyebuchi Okoli, who is the leader of female adherents of Ngene Agu Deity noted that the power of God is resident in the place, as prayers made are h , noting that there is no diabolical manipulation but an avenue to offer prayers to the land and ancestral spirits for answers.

 

In his reaction, Mr. Chuba Nwobu, a traditionalist from Umuoramma village Awka pointed out that the power in nature is incomprehensible, noting that there is nothing evil in tradition and culture, while thanking God for a successful event.

Masquerades display, dances, music performances and prayers to the Deity featured prominently during the event.
