The federal government has been asked to look inwards and review the welfare of workers in Nigeria, especially in view of the economic realities facing the citizens.

 

The Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, Mr Ossy Onuko made the call while receiving members of the Organised Labour, Anambra state chapter who called on him in his office in Awka.

Playing host to the group, Mr Onuko said that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is very interested in the welfare of the state workforce and has been having a good relationship with them since inception.

 

He noted that his office will always partner with the Organised Labour in every move towards ensuring and promoting their welfare, adding that because his parents were civil servants, he understands what it means to raise a family with salary and will support whatever that would boost the living conditions of the workers.

The ACTDA boss expressed worry that the present economic realities in the country are biting hard on the workers, and urged the federal government to as a matter of urgency, review workers’ take home to ease their sufferings.

 

 

Speaking earlier, the Anambra State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor who led the Organised Labour committee for the upcoming May Day, 2024 celebration, said that they decided to partner Mr Onuko because of his records as the Managing Director of the agency, saying that the agency has improved the aesthetics of Awka capital territory within his short period in office, urging him not to relent.

On his part, the chairman of the 2024 May Day celebration, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu who is also the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Anambra state council noted that the Organised Labour has critically monitored the activities of ACTDA in the state and observed that the agency is interested in giving Awka, a status it requires as a state capital and not to witch-hunt anyo

 

 

Dr Odogwu said that it was based on such records that the workers decided to partner the agency in organising a one-week long activities that will usher in the May Day being the workers day, to bring in innovation to the event and change the old way of celebrating workers in the state as introduced by the NLC chairman, comrade Nwafor.

The Vice chairman of NLC and the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Chika Chukwudozie thanked the ACTDA boss for the warm reception given to them and for promising to partner with the workers in preparation for their May Day activities.

 

 

 

Other members of the Organised Labour Anambra state chapter, including the state chairman of Radio, Television and Theater Arts Workers Union, RATTAWU, Comrade Maureen Stone Enujioke, the State Chairman of Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria, Comrade Henry Ezeoke, State Secretary of NLC, Comrade Gaus Chukwuka, the State Secretary, Nigeria Civil Service Union, Conrade Kingsley Egumba among others were part of the visit.
