Governor Chukwuma Soludo has assured women of inclusion in state government policies and programmes as a way of providing them access to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the society.
The governor stated this during a summit to commemorate the International Women’s Day at Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, Awka organized by the All for Women Initiative Nigeria, A-WIN.
Professor Soludo represented by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne who was honoured with “Corporate Achievers Excellence Award” by A-WIN, appreciated the group for their role and passion in reshaping the place of women and the girl child in the country and expressed willingness to do more.
Governor Soludo stated that one’s journey in life would not have been successful without the contributions of notable women that gave them the support and tutelage to begin.
Addressing the women, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Kate Omenugha said that a life of a woman is likened to that of a clergy who live a humble and exemplary lifestyle, asking women to always be hardworking, focused, imbibe loyalty, remain strong and never give up in achieving their individual goals and needs in life.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, on his part, noted that improved maternal healthcare delivery is important in the lives of every family and women to reduce infertility rate and appreciated Governor Soludo’s efforts in health especially on free antenatal and health insurance scheme.
In their separate speeches, the National Chairperson, Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Aisha Ibrahim Kwaya-Bura and the first female Professor of Mass communication in Nigeria, Professor Stella Okunna all charged women to ensure a better and positive lifestyle, while caring for their families and themselves above any other and warned them against feeling less of themselves but rather attain their full potential in all fields of human endeavour.
Presenting awards to some deserving individuals, the convener of the event, Comrade Stella Igboka said that the reason for the award is to extoll the giant contributions of distinguished personalities in championing and uplifting women in all areas and appreciated their sponsors and partners for making this year’s celebration a remarkable one and assured their continued efforts in reaching out to the vulnerable and fight abuses against women and child molestation of all sorts.
The event was well attended by captains of industry, political class, the academia, journalists, government, notable NGOs, the Traditional Ruler of Umueri, Igwe Benette Emeka, Managing Director, Anambra Broadcasting Service, Sir Chido Obidiegwu, among other women groups.
