The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption, ROLAC, programme II has embarked on a campaign against gender-based violence especially those targeted at women in Anambra State.

 

The sensitization campaign which will be hosted in the three senatorial districts in Anambra State was to draw attention that women should be empowered and included in the decision-making process.

The programme, launched as part of activities marking the International Women’s Day Celebration, kick started at Anaocha Local Government Area Headquarters, Neni for Anambra Central District.

 

It attracted stakeholders from the seven local government areas in the districts, women leaders and heads of different organizations who are expected to go back to their various communities to disseminate the message learnt during the campaign.

It has its theme as “Inspire Women’s Participation Towards Ending Gender-Based Violence”.

 

Flagging off the programme at Neni, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo said that the present administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo holds the issues of women and children to high esteem and has worked against violence against persons, set up family court, and established a special Unit that oversees the issues concerning violence against persons.

The Commissioner who spoke through her aide, Mrs. Blessing Nweke commended RoLAC II for such programme, stating that the Ministry will continue to support any and every effort geared towards creating better living conditions for women in the society.

 

The State Coordinator, RoLAC, Mrs Josephine Onah represented by the Assistant Coordinator, Mr Shedrack Nwekeagu while presenting a paper on “Achieving Gender Equality, Women’s Empowerment and Ending Violence Against Women: A review of Women Inclusion in Anambra State” noted that women should be strengthened and given rights which includes lands and property, food security, employment and protected against gender-based violence.

In a goodwill message, the Transition Committee Chairman, Anaocha Council Area, Mr Gerald Ozoh, extolled the Governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo for all her efforts in ensuring that Anambra women are given a better life, even as he said he will set up committee in the local government to ensure that no woman faces violence or exposed to obnoxious cultural practices and if any is caught, such a person will face the full weight of law.

 

On his part, the Traditional Ruler of Akweze, Igwe Christopher Okpala encouraged mothers to stand strong in their families, protect and work against all odds saying that it is the duty of the women to enthrone sanity and morals in the society.

In his remarks, the Chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, in Anaocha Local Government Area, Sir Anthony Ugorji charged women to do away with all vices that will lead to violence but to contribute to the growth and betterment of their family, saying that they should all support Governor Soludo and his wife, Nonye to make Anambra great.

 

The wife of the Transition Committee Chairman, Anaocha Council Area, Mrs Chiamaka Ozoh and many other women were in attendance while flag off proper led to the climax of the program.
