Anambra governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has explained that the major aim of her breast cancer mitigation programme is to help women deal with the threat of the dangerous disease through early detection.
Mrs Soludo stated this when she received representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) and staff of the state’s Ministry of Health at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia.
In her remarks, the governor’s wife commended WHO’s commitment to stronger health partnerships with the state, including its active involvement in the first phase of free cervical cancer screening and treatment in the State.
She also applauded the WHO for affirming support for the planned breast cancer mitigation programme, which she is championing, and for also agreeing to support the inclusion of prostate cancer screening in the same programme.
Mrs Soludo equally pointed out that the breast cancer mitigation programme is aimed at cutting down the disease threats by opening up opportunities for early and prompt checks and, in most cases, treatments.
On his part, the WHO Medical Officer for Non-Communicable Diseases, Dr Kelias Msyamboza, extended the WHO’s commendation to Mrs Soludo for her input in the cervical cancer screening and treatment initiative, and disclosed that the organization is going to support her programmes, including the breast cancer mitigation programme to ensure that it achieves optimum results.
In his remarks, the Coordinator, Anambra State, WHO, Dr Mohammed Bonos, commended the governor’s wife for her interventions in tackling health issues among women and children in Anambra State, and pledged WHO’s greater partnerships with the state in other critical health areas.
He also announced that Anambra and twenty other states in the country have been selected to benefit from the first supply of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, and appealed to the governor’s wife to help with mobilization so that the target population will be effectively covered.
Earlier, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, highlighted the results recorded from the partnerships with WHO in Anambra State, including the successes of the first phase of the free cervical cancer screening and treatment and immunization for child-killer diseases.
Dr Obidike noted that the governor’s wife has also developed strong structures to take off the breast cancer mitigation programme in the state, pointing out that the overall intention is to make Anambra State a pilot domain in the country where both early detection and treatment would be tackled appropriately.
