The staff and students of Community Secondary School Mgbakwu have held their first inter-house sports competition in over a decade.

 

The parents of the students and members of the non-academic staff of the school were also in a similar mood during the competition which saw them participate in different indoor and outdoor games and other activities showcasing the culture and traditions of Ndi Mgbakwu in Awka North Local Government Area.

The competition organized by the Old Boys Association of the School formerly known as Boys Secondary School Mgbakwu was a way to help the students develop themselves through physical and extra-curricular activities so as to ensure an all-round education.

 

It was one of the many initiatives of the Old Boys Association in their efforts to give back to the school, even as they had earlier embarked on renovations, donation of learning materials to students and improvement of welfare of staff and management of the school.

Speaking at the event, the Zonal Director of Education, Post Primary School Service Commission, Awka Zone, Mrs Ngozi Chukwujekwu said that the programme has broken the jinx of many years of lack of such activity in the school, saying that she was impressed by the talent and physical fitness shown by the students and expressed the hope that when harnessed properly the students will have the sky as their limits and commended the Principal of the School, Dr Mrs Uche Uzoh and the alumni of the school for organizing such an important event.

 

In an address of welcome, the principal of the school, Dr Uzoh described the contributions of the old boys of the school as very important milestones in the archives of the school and revealed that the gigantic school gate under construction is also being sponsored by the Old Boys of the School.

On his part, the Chairman on the occasion, Mr Ikechukwu Igwebuike who was represented by the Chairman, Parent-Teacher Association of the school, Mr Arinze Nwoye said that Inter-house sports lifts the spirits of the students in sporting activities and asked that such activities be made a regular feature in the school.

 

Speaking on behalf of the Old Boys Association, a member of the association, Mr Micheal Madumelu said that the old boys during their recent meeting decided to give back to the school, having noticed its deterioration and emphasized that their choice to also organize an inter-house sport was to develop human beings and as well develop the physical infrastructure of the school.

The students were divided into six houses, namely Green House sponsored by Obinna Ejianya, Purple House sponsored by Oliver Obiche and Red House by Chinedu OO

 

Others are Blue House by Samson Kwashy Onuora, Yellow House by Chikelu Obalum as well as Orange House by Ezemulueze and all the sponsors are the Old Boys of the School.

 

Dignitaries that attended the event included the Transition Committee Chairman of Awka North Local Government Area, Comrade ThankGod Anago and the President General of Mgbakwu Community, Mr Basil Chukwu-Nwokeoma.
