The Anambra State House of Assembly will tomorrow, Friday 22nd March, 2024 hold a special valedictory session in honour of the late former Speaker of the Fourth Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Anayo Nnebe. The late Right Honourable Nnebe was Speaker between 2007 and 2011.

 

 

 

He was first elected as the member for Awka South One Constituency under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and subsequently elected by the members of the Fourth State Assembly as the Speaker due largely to his leadership qualities.

 

 

 

The late former Speaker, showed character, maturity, capacity and experience during his leadership of the State House of Assembly as the Speaker.

 

 

 

He functioned when there was challenging political situation in the state. During his time as the Speaker, the thirty members of the State House of Assembly were of the Peoples Democratic party while the then Governor, Mr. Peter Obi was elected under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

 

 

 

Ordinarily, this situation would have resulted in political crisis except for the maturity exhibited by the late former Speaker Nnebe in handling the situation as he applied his deep knowledge of politics and power as well as government and development to establish a cordial working relationship between the Executive and Legislative Arms of the government in the interest of peace and progress of Anambra State. Till date, he is being lauded for that landmark achievement.

 

The late former Speaker started his political journey as Secretary to the Government of Awka South Local Government Area, House of Assembly member for Awka South One Constituency and later made the Speaker, member of the House of Representatives that represented Awka North and South Federal

 

 

 

Constituency in the National Assembly under the All Progressives Grand Alliance

 

(APGA) and died in active service as the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on House of Assembly and Legislative Matters.

 

 

 

The Fourth Assembly under his watch enacted laws and resolutions that are people oriented. For instance, it was during his time that the “Child Rights Bill” was passed and signed into law by the former Governor, Dame Virgy Etiaba. It is on record that the Fourth Anambra State House of Assembly under the watch of the late former Speaker was the first Legislature in Nigeria to pass the “Child Rights Bill”.

 

 

 

As a grassroot politician, the late Right Honourable Nnebe did a lot of constituency projects in Awka South One Constituency as well as Awka North and South Federal Constituency in addition to various empowerment programmes.

 

 

 

He was a great man, no matter what standard greatness is measured and a renowned community leader whose contributions to the development of his Awka community earned him the Chieftaincy Title “Ichele Dikeora Awka”.

 

The late Right Honourable Nnebe was a good family man, peace maker and philanthropist. His religious standing is encouraging as he was a Knight of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.

 

 

 

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze in his tribute described the late former Speaker, Right Honourable Nnebe as a man who grew from the roots and maintained that his death is a true definition of a MONUMENTAL LOSS, putting into consideration his eventful life and times.

 

 

 

According to Right Honourable Udeze, the late former Speaker was an outstanding legislator, astute politician, distinguished public servant, community leader and above all, a devout Christian.

 

The Speaker noted with satisfaction that the Legislative Institution in Nigeria is proud of the late Right Honourable Nnebe in view of his contributions to the growth and development of the Legislature both as former Speaker of the State Assembly and member of the National Assembly.

 

 

 

The State House of Assembly is therefore proud to be associated with the sterling qualities and achievements of the late former Speaker, Right Honourable Nnebe Testimonies from members of the State House of Assembly are praises to the former Speaker for the able manner he discharged his duties as a lawmaker and Executive-Legislative Liaison Chief.

 

 

 

The members of the Eighth Anambra State Assembly and indeed the entire staff of the Legislature are mourning his demise and paying tributes to the distinguished parliamentarian, for rendering quality services to God and humanity and console his wife, children and relatives, Ndi Awka, Ndi Awka North and South Local Government Areas, Ndi Anambra and Nigerians with the fact that the late former Speaker, Right Honourable Nnebe lived a good and fulfilled life.
