Awka, Anambra State has become the Southeast Zonal headquarters of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission, an agency established by the Federal Government in April, 2021, as the regulatory and intervention body for the senior secondary education sub-sector of the Nigerian education system.

 

The Executive Secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission, Dr Iyela Ajayi disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim at the Government House Awka.

Dr Ajayi who revealed that before the establishment of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission, it was only the Senior Secondary education segment of the Nigerian education system that was left without a regulatory and intervention agency in spite of the fact that it is the bridge between basic education and tertiary education, which according to him has made senior secondary education segment suffer neglect for many years.

 

Describing the past two years of Governor Chukwuma Soludo led administration as two years of landmark achievements and exemplary leadership, Dr Ajayi rated Anambra State high in education excellence, saying that the commission decided to make Anambra State the Southeast Zonal headquarters because of the revolution going on in the education sector of the state.

Dr Ajayi advised the Federal Government on increased funding and development of senior secondary education in Nigeria, and appealed to Anambra state government to provide temporary office for the commission in Awka and allocate empty land for the construction of the permanent complex of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission Southeast headquarters.

 

Responding, Dr Ibezim thanked the commission for finding Anambra State worthy for Southeast zonal headquarters, assuring that the government of Professor Chukwuma Soludo will give the commission all the necessary support and intimated the delegates of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission with all the achievements of the present administration in the education sector, including the recruitment of five thousand teachers, ongoing recruitment process of another three thousand teachers, among others.

In a remark, the Chairman Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu described the recent position of the state in the national education sector as well-deserved and assured the commission that Anambra state and the education sector will not disappoint them.
