A special valedictory session has been held in honour of the fallen former Speaker, of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Gabriel Anayo Nnebe, with members of the House paying tributes.

 

Before his demise, Right Honourable Nnebe served as the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Legislative and Assembly Matters.

The deceased also represented Awka South Constituency One at the State Assembly and served as Speaker of the fourth Assembly from 2007 to 2011, while he represented Awka North and South Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives between 2015 and 2019.

 

During the emotion laden plenary held at the State House of Assembly Complex, Governor Soludo, represented by his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, extended condolences to the deceased family, praising Nnebe’s humility and role as a bridge builder, acknowledging the void left by his passage.

In his tribute, the Speaker of the Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, described the late Right Honourable Nnebe as a prominent figure whose legacies will endure, highlighting his leadership qualities and contributions to the society, while praying for strength for the bereaved family.

 

On his part, Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, commended Right Honourable Nnebe’s impactful life and collaborative spirit with the executive, urging the family to find solace in his legacy.

Tributes poured in from various members of the Assembly, including Deputy Speaker, Right Honourable Chukwuma Okoye, who described the deceased as a political stalwart with an unblemished record, and Mr. Henry Mbachu, representing Awka South Constituency One and his Anaocha Constituency Two Counterpart, Sir, Ejike Okechukwu praised his exemplary leadership and humility.

 

Members of the National Assembly, who spoke through the member representing Onitsha North and South Federal Constituency, Chief Emeka Idu, recognized Right Honourable Nnebe as a visionary leader, emphasizing his legacy of peace and compassion.

In a vote of thanks, his son Mr. Kanayo Nnebe, thanked dignitaries and Assembly members for honoring his father’s memory.

 

The Anambra State 2021 Gubernatorial Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Chief Valentine Ozigbo, the National Chairman of the All Progressives’ Grand Alliance, Barrister Sylvester Ezeokenwa, and the traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu represented by the traditional Prime Minister of Awka Community Chief Benjamin Okoye, former speakers, ex-lawmakers, members of the Anambra State Executive Council, and individuals from diverse backgrounds, also paid their last respects to the fallen former Speaker.

 

Meanwhile, the remains of the late Right Honorable Gabriel Anayo Nnebe will be laid to rest today at his family compound in Umuokpu Awka after a church service at Saint Paul’s Anglican Church in the area.

 

The late former speaker who died at the age of sixty-one, is survived by his wife Ngozi, children, in law and relations.
