It was a testimony galore as remains of the late Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Anayo Nnebe, were laid to rest at his compound Umuokpu, Awka, in Awka South Local Government Area.

 

The burial was preceded by a funeral service at St. Paul’s Parish Umuokpu, officiated by the Most Reverend Alexander Ibezim, the Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of the Niger and the Anglican Bishop of Awka Diocese, and was attended by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, former Governor Peter Obi, the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtoochukwu Udeze, some members of the Anambra State Executive Council, serving and former lawmakers, and prominent citizens of Awka Town among others.

In a sermon during the service, Most Reverend Ibezim charged the people to always be their brother’s keepers by helping those in need, and described the late Right Honorable Nnebe as an epitome of quality leadership, as he was always in touch with the people at the grassroots and expressed sympathy for the people of Awka Community, Anambra State, Nigeria, and his family members for the great loss.

 

The Most Reverend Ibezim urged those in positions of leadership to use their power to improve the living standards of the people, rather than enriching themselves through corruption, while emphasizing the importance of ethical leadership and the responsibility of those in power.

In a remark, Governor Chukwuma Soludo who went down memory lane on how he came in close contact with the late lawmaker described him as bridge builder, compassionate and seasoned politician without borders, saying that the deceased was part of a series of successes recorded by his administration.

 

In an interview, Chief Tim Egboka, who represented Aguata Constituency one in the fourth Anambra State House of Assembly, said that Right Honorable Anayo Nnebe was a remarkable speaker and a true leader adding that his humility and courage, were truly inspiring

Some prominent Awka indigenes that attended the burial including, Professor Augustine Nnonyelu, Dr Sabastine Anekwe, Chief Jonas Ekwenugo, chief Ndubisi Nwobu described the late speaker as a grassroots mobilizer and team player who always valued every human.

 

For Chief Clemson Nnonyelu, who is a school mate of the deceased, Awka community has Lost an outspoken personality who always remembered his people, and that the former Speaker used everything in his disposal to impact on the people.

The Managing Director of Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) Dr Mike Ozoenena and a community leader in Awka, Chief Obi Ochije Modilim, described the deceased as a quintessential politician, committed Christian and a peace maker.

 

In a special tribute by members of Awka Diocesan council of Knights read by their President, Professor Emma Ezenwaji, they traced the humble beginning of Right Honorable Nnebe who lost his father at the age of seven and commended his contributions for the growth of the church and the larger society.

In a vote of thanks, the son of the deceased, Mr Anayo Nnebe Junior, thanked the Anambra State Government, the church and those who contributed in giving their late father a befitting burial.

The Right Honorable Anayo Nnebe who died at the age of sixty-one is survived by his wife Ngozi, children, in-law and many relatives.
