Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has embarked on resuscitation of pipe borne water across the state after being abandoned for many decades. This has received commendations from people and residents of the state as it will have multiplier effects on socio-economic life and future of the state.

On the 22nd of March 2024, the United Nations during the celebration of World Water Day stressed that clean drinking water is a basic human right.

Unfortunately two -point -two billion people across the globe do not have access to clean water supply. Presently in Nigeria, only an insignificant percent can afford clean drinking water. Contaminated water according to World Health Organization causes diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio among other diseases Water is not only important for health, it can also promote clean and hygienic environment. It creates peace, and maintain stability because when water is scarce or polluted, or when people have unequal or no access to clean water , it can increase tensions and possible unrest . Water can be a stabilizing force and a catalyst for sustainable development.

The Sustainable Development Goal number six centers on water and sanitation for all by 2030. Every responsible government today is striving towards fulfilling the goals and attain its objectives The Water and Public Health Research Group, University of Nigeria Nsukka recently disclosed that water is both a crucial resource and a major challenge as its quality and availability constitute powerful determinants of sustainable health, economic growth and social development.

Nigeria cannot have improved living standards and economic development without the prosperity that comes from sustainable clean water supply.

The poverty rate in the country was estimated at thirty eight point nine percent in 2023, with an estimated eighty seven million Nigerians living below the poverty line which classified the country as the world’s second-largest poor population after India.

Nigeria, as a country is blessed with rich cultural diversity and abundant resources, but is presently grappling with the complex interplay of socioeconomic challenges and poor standard of living among its populace. Improved standard of living encompasses various indicators, including access to clean water, adequate housing, nutritious food, accessible and affordable healthcare services, quality education and economic opportunities. So, limited access to clean water and sanitation facilities, inadequate housing, food insecurity and inadequate healthcare infrastructure are persistent challenges that hinder improvement in the standard of living across the country.

Efforts towards providing sustainable clean water supply will help promote inclusive growth and enhance social protection programs which are essential for fostering a more equitable society. Collaboration between the government, civil society organizations, and the private sector is imperative to effect meaningful change and improve the well-being of all Nigerians. The daily price increase of food items, essential commodities and general goods and services in Nigeria is not only worrisome but also compounding the challenge of lack of access to clean and hygienic water in most parts of the country.

There should be a comprehensive strategies and intentional approach to address inequality and enhance quality of life in Nigeria by giving the citizens easy access to basic necessities including regular clean water supply.

The challenges facing the nation requires concerted efforts towards poverty reduction and sustainable development which are vital for building a more prosperous and happy citizens. Clean and abundant freshwater is fundamental and necessary to human health in every country.
